Kingfishers, Hummingbirds and Puffins

 Kingfishers

There are many kinds of kingfishers. The species most requested is the Belted Kingfisher and it's usually the female that's requested (or expected) because the male lacks the striking chestnut band on the lower breast.

Six very different carvings are shown here, each beautiful in its own way.  Remember, each of Matt's carvings is done one at a time, without patterns, assuring a unique carving for every client.   The price is $400.

"...captured the spirit and behavior."

This kingfisher carving lacks the time-consuming detail found in
those above, Hence is less than half the price at ($150)

Puffins

The puffin most seen in books and magazines is the Atlantic Puffin, shown in the three photos directly below. Currently, a puffin of the quality shown sells for $500 with carved legs, not pewter casts.  Notice the frontal view (center photo).  You will see that the bill is very narrow, an important feature to look for in a correct puffin carving.  Look for this feature when deciding on whose work to choose.

"I have seen about 10 Puffins available from $1,500, to $32, and then yours at $500. And honestly, yours is the best."

The Horned Puffin (shown below) of  the Pacific Coast differs from the Atlantic Puffin mainly in the color of the bill.

One of Matt's puffin clients was inspired to write the following poem:

Tears in the Rain

 Little puffin, on the bookcase,
Gazing out the window,
      Serious, standing firm.

                                                                 A soldier.
Focused.

What visions, what mysteries
     Swirl within your wooden heart?

Long you for sea cliffs and tumultuous oceans
Swelling, Pulsating, Churning, Crashing, Rising, Falling?

Do you long for lady puffins?
Sunning upon those cliffs, with nests and eggs,
Casting fertile glances your way -

     Perhaps a wink or two?

Or are you a Pinocchio longing to be flesh?

Little puffin, I stand here with you.
Was this moment forged before the beginning of memory?

       We are very close.

                                                    Rain upon the window
                                                         Rivulets twisting, crawling
                                                                 Down the pane.

                                                                            Tell me, little imprisoned one,
                                                                               Are these your tears?
